20-25 April 2017
In the afternoon we fly from Charelston to Houston on the far better Southwest Airlines; then drive to Austin to meet John; via the enigmatic Hruškas shop - a Czech outpost!
We are here to conduct a tour of the Texas MotoGP; but Austin is a fine city to hang out and enjoy the sights. We are at the Grand Hyatt, so in very good comfort, although the outdoor swimming pool was a bit frosty!
A nearby mini-golf course was a favourite of Alex's who had to play three times there. Daddy beating him by just one stroke each of the two times they competed! The famous bats were a bit underwhelming (but Gordon saw them a few years ago and they were amazing) but it is a lovely city to wander. Alex and Jana were at our VIP suite at the track Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Saturday we hit a local joint - Coopers BBQ. Just walk up, point to your meats and they serve on a paper placemat! After the excellent racing Sunday, we hit a local Mexican restaurant and Alex loves the table-made guacamole and his taco!
We have a rare day off Monday, and Alex writes most of the agenda: a round of mini golf, playing pool (and air hockey, table footbal) in the Buffalo Bills Billiard Hall on 5th street; and daddy takes us to a brilliant little taco truck - the Pueblo Viejo, where we had enjoyed a late night meal Thursday with customers. The Hope Outdoor graffiti gallery is fascinating, as are many little sights around Austin, which is why their motto is "Keep Austin Weird". We end at the local restaurant Zax for a brilliant closing meal followed by ice cream at the famous Sandy's.
An 06:00 flight Tuesday morning means we don't make a late night of it!
